Whatever creature you create, here’s a lifehack to make everyone adore it: make it a baby. It has been proven to work with alien babies from a galaxy far, far away, but it also works with creatures populating the Earth; dinosaurs are no exception. The name of one of the latest LEGO Jurassic World sets, 75939 Dr. Wu’s Lab: Baby Dinosaurs Breakout speaks for itself. This medium-priced set comes with 164 pieces and includes two minifigures and two adorable dinosaurs. Box and contents
This is the smallest set of the LEGO Jurassic World 2020 spring wave, besides the 75942 Velociraptor: Biplane Rescue Mission, which is a 4+ product. Looking at the pictures on the box, it’s easy to notice how much playability and play scenarios the set has, thanks to two dinosaurs and a ton of accessories.
Despite being on the small side, the set offers a nice assortment of pieces in dark blue and a couple of larger plates in white. Whether you are designing buildings or spaceships, these elements will be of great use to you.
Huge digital screens are essential for modern high-tech laboratories. Hence there are several stickers depicting screens with video feeds, maps, and other data.
Minifigures and dinosaurs
No doubts, a great pack of minifgures and dinosaurs is the primary reason to get the set. Although the characters are not brand new, Owen Grady comes with the new torso design, while Dr. Henry Wu has new facial expressions. Both characters have two emotions. But, of course, it’s the baby dinosaurs who steal the show.
Baby Triceratops and baby Ankylosaurus are brand new LEGO figures. Both designs use dual-molding; tan goes very well with both olive green and sand green. The pictures don’t do justice to this couple as tiny white horns, and lovely prints place them among the cutest LEGO figures I’ve ever seen.
While baby Ankylosaurus is still way too young to have fun together with the parks’ visitors, baby Triceratops can carry a minifigure on its back. It’s an excellent play feature that can be used to recreate a scene from Jurassic World movie.
The summer wave of LEGO Jurassic World sets brings a bunch of great dinosaur figures. In the picture below, you can see how the new babies compare to animals from other new sets.
Complete build and playability
The lab consists of several zones with a massive lab table than can be placed on either side of the build. Note all the open studs and clips strategically placed all over the lab; those are very useful and convenient when you want to put any of the many accessories that come in the set.
In my opinion, the lab egg incubator is the best part of the set. It features excellent use of the ordinary Technic wheel part in white; this is something that I would expect to see in a fan creation rather than in an official LEGO set. The articulated arm is a surprisingly playable yet straightforward build that fits in the lab just perfectly.
The middle section of the lab is laden with all kinds of screens and computers. I find a lack of keyboards a bit disturbing, but all the systems should be voice-activated. Unfortunately, the stickers are way too specific to be used in a custom creation, but the transparent sticker on the main screen looks impressive thanks to the piece’s blue hue.
Kudos to the design team for making the most of the set’s modest play area. The back of the middle section contains some more stickers with panels and a couple of levers. This should be enough for a couple more play scenarios.
The right side of the laboratory is where all the action takes place. By crashing a glass wall, baby Triceratops can wreak havoc all over the place. I find the sticker with a video feed of the angry baby Triceratops to be absolutely adorable.
Finally, a massive office table is yet another smart way to create more play space. Even though it isn’t a remarkable piece of office furniture, there are many great accessories on top of it: a laptop, a microscope, and even a transparent 1×1 brick with a print of an ancient mosquito trapped inside a piece of amber.
Final thoughts and recommendations
Everyone loves dinosaurs, and those who disagree are just in denial. If you are looking to expand your collection of LEGO dinosaurs, the new LEGO Jurassic World 75939 Dr. Wu’s Lab: Baby Dinosaurs Breakout is your best choice. For its price, the set has excellent value and hardly any flaws. I would call it a must-have for LEGO toy photographers and a safe option for any fan of LEGO animals and minifigures.
