2019 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 19

Welcome to Day 19 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the four mini-builds from the LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. What does Day 19 have to surprise us?

For Day 19, we have a fireplace from Harry Potter and a mynock from Star Wars.

Dave: That Harry Potter fireplace is pretty good for an advent build, and those medium nougat scroll bricks are rare! They’ve only appeared in 10259 Winter Village Station two years ago and the recent 60203 Ski Resort.

For Star Wars, a mynock is a great way to make the calendar feel a bit more special this year (though the clear stand is not included–I added that for a better photo). Those dark tan wings have only been available in the biggest and second biggest LEGO sets of all time (75192 UCS Millenium Falcon and huge 71034 Hogwarts Castle), so hopefully they will become a bit more common so Star Was builders can create a proper mynock army!

Daniel: Alex, I’ll take Star Wars Reptiles for $300. They latch onto spaceships and chew on things. “What is a mynock?” A pretty decent build for both.

Lino: Like moths attracted to the flame, mynocks are also not that bright.

Benjamin: I knew I should have had the chimney cleaned out.

Chris: The mynock was previously exclusive to the UCS Millennium Falcon, so even if you buy the Star Wars Advent Calendar just for this guy, it’s still the cheapest way to get a set with a mynock by approximately $760.

Matt: Mynocks are cool, but I’d rather have the chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

Continuing with Day 19, we have a tree ornament from Friends and a grandfather clock from City.

Dave: There’s that pesky book that was missing from Day 13 of the City advent! Granny can now read her stories on her rocking chair next to this simple grandfather clock. That clock face is one of my favorite prints ever, and it has only come in a handful of big sets including 10255 Assembly Square, 71040 Disney Castle and the recent 71044 Disney Train and Station. The tree ornament is a minimalist approach, but passable, though it suffers the same fate as many of the Friends “ornament” builds, “let’s just stick a rounded handle on it and call it good!”

Lino: They’re late…I thought the mandatory reading programs would go better.

Benjamin: At least the Friends tree is better than the Ninjago… um… City one from Day 6.

Chris: I don’t think I’m sold on that Christmas tree. It needs at least one more layer of boughs.

Chuck: That… is a weak tree. Seriously, so many things can pop off of it easily!

Matt: Once upon a time, there was a tiny tree. Atop that tree there was a little star. And that star loved doing pull-ups. Just look at those “guns!”

Whenever we can, we’ll mash up all the LEGO advent calendar builds from that specific day and see what kind of hilarity ensues. Please enjoy these hijinks!

Dave: Sirius Black’s face hightailed it out of the cozy Gryffindor common room fireplace when Hagrid’s newest pet “Sucky” broke through the window and perched on the nearby Christmas tree. (Sidenote: are the mynock and the Friends’ snowman relatives? They have the same eyes!)

Lino: This was going to be the cover art for Ozzy’s ill-fated Christmas album.

Benjamin: Shouldn’t the book say, “‘Twas the night before Christmas”? It is almost midnight, time for ol’ St. Nick to drop down the chimney and battle the mynocks in the classic poem, right?

Chris: I don’t think I can top Lino’s comment.

Chuck: Once it starts feeding on the sapling, it’s too late.

Matt: Who needs Krampus to freak out the kiddos when you’ve got a yuletide mynock slipping down the chimney?

The dark tan wings were also available in the NINJAGO set Destiny’s Wing, as part of a shrine.
