LEGO Creator Expert Modular for 2020 revealed as 10270 Bookshop [News]

LEGO has revealed the upcoming Creator Expert Modular for 2020 as the 10270 Bookshop. The set comes with 2,504 pieces which create a pair of three-story buildings similar to 10218 Pet Shop from 2011. The model features the “Birch Books” bookstore and an accompanying Townhouse. The Bookshop comes with five minifigures and two animals including a chameleon and a blue bird.

10270 Bookshop will be available from LEGO beginning January 1st for US $179.99 | CAN $199.99 | UK £149.99.

The set is a return to more classical and European architecture from the last two more modern-American modular designs, 10264 Corner Garage and 10260 Downtown Diner. The Bookshop was created by LEGO designer Wes Talbott, who said the model was inspired by the houses of Amsterdam and the dollhouses that were built by his mother.

The Bookshop is built on two separate baseplates enabling multiple display options and configurations.  The combined final model measures more than 11 inches high (29 cm), nine inches wide (25 cm) wide and nine inches deep (25 cm).

The first floor of the Bookshop features a birch tree with several new colors of foliage elements as well as a display window and store in medium nougat and light grey colors. The first floor of the Townhouse is more of a raised basement featuring a staircase, garden and lamp post.

The second floor of the Bookshop features decorative white windows, and a reading room with a grandfather clock, lamp and sitting chair. The second floor of the Townhouse (or more a raised main floor) is colored in teal with white accents and features a bay window, dining table and living area.

The third floor of the Bookshop has a dark red roof with light grey architectural details. The roof of the Townhouse is more complex with a varied roof-line, dark blue tiling and dark grey top.

The backside of the modular is fairly simple and flat with a variety of doors and windows, a stairway and garden, and several balconies. The back part of the roof of each section breaks away to reveal two small bedrooms.

The Bookshop comes with five minifigures and several mini-builds featuring a bookshelf with a new printed “Moby Brick” book cover, four-poster bed, lamp, grandfather clock, and toy plane. A new bluebird and chameleon are also included.

The five minifigures include a shopkeeper with glasses, an older man with grey hair, a young boy in a flannel jacket (with brand new lime green scarf), a woman with a purple top, and a man with suspenders and a tie.

10270 Bookshop comes with 2,504 and five minifigures, and will be available from LEGO for US $179.99 | CAN $199.99 | UK £149.99 beginning January 1st.

This looks fine for a Creator set. For a modular? Not so much. The bookstore is cramped. The backs of the two buildings look pretty terrible.

  2. Benjamin

It’s not terrible, but it is a big step backwards from the last four(the new generation) modulars. Downtown Diner in particular was a huge step into the future, it was not only the best designed modular but one of best designed lego sets period. I was really hoping they would continue to push for that level of quality. Particular looking at the interior this is a big step backwards which is sad.

I’m worried if the push for innovation alienated enough people that they felt pressured to go backwards. If so that would really be worrisome for the future of the modular line.

  3. Shazam

While I’m sure this set has some shortcomings (i think any modular not designed by Jamie berard will), can we all agree this is a VERY VERY VERY welcome return to more appealing architectul style? I’m obsessed with modulars but didn’t even bother buying the last two. The diner in particular is so out of place in the lineup due to all that plasticky neon on the front. I was worried the newest modular might be bauhaus or something equally horrific, so I’m ecstatic about this set. Hoping it sells well and LEGO continues with more pre-war tastiness.

  4. Mr Classic

@Shazam: No we can’t. I certainly was hoping for a more modern look like the fantastic Downtown Diner, instead of a step back to the old style architecture.

  5. Snazzerton

I agree with Shazam; I strongly prefer this style, and avoided the last two sets for the same reasons. The diner at least had character compared to the garage, and might work great as a stand-alone, but neither would have fit with the rest of the line.
The interior is definitely disappointing, but I assume that’s a price control thing more than a space thing. (The treehouse managed to pack a TON of great detail into three tiny rooms.)

  6. AJ Meyer

I immediately liked seeing two half buildings, as it’s nice to have the option to move them around with other buildings for different layouts within a collection of modulars. The interiors look great, and the color schemes, especially the blue building us attractive. Very nicely done!

  7. Jamie

Wow. That is seriously boring. I can’t see one technique that makes me stop and ask “How did they do that?” Isn’t that what a Modular should do?

  8. Some Body

Sounds like we have some different goals here for the modular series. I respect that some of you want a complex build; I’m glad you have a number of those to choose from. For others of us the series is about creating a sense of place. I find this one completely charming with its colors, facades, and street feel — this is a place where I would want to be.
