LEGO unveils massive Batmobile set based on Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, available on Black Friday [News]

LEGO has officially unveiled its newest collector’s set, 76139 1989 Batmobile, a massive 3,306-piece model based on the Caped Crusader’s vehicle from Tim Burton’s iconic Batman film. Perhaps one of LEGO’s worst-kept secrets of the past year, this set features a slide-open cockpit with a new windshield, two pop-up machine guns and a rotating display stand. The model also comes with three new minifigures: Batman, The Joker and Vicki Vale.

The 1989 Batmobile will be available from LEGO beginning on November 29 for Black Friday. The set will retail for US $249.99 | CAN $299.99 | UK £219.99.

In addition to other LEGO Black Friday deals, those who purchase the 1989 Batmobile between November 29th and December 5th will receive an exclusive mini replica of the original model as a free gift-with-purchase while supplies last. The “not-so-mini” 40433 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition comes with 366 pieces and a rotating base as well.

The 1989 Batmobile comes in a sleek UCS-style black box with the silhouette of the Dark Knight on the side. For context, LEGO has previously released a version of the Batmobile they coined a UCS version — 2006’s 7784 The Batmobile. This year’s newer version benefits from more than a decade of new parts and advanced building techniques, and while it isn’t officially a UCS set, it certainly seems like LEGO wants you to feel like it is.

The Batmobile comes with a rotating platform so it can be seen from any angle as well as an information plate with facts about the vehicle. The model recreates the heavy feel of the movie’s original Batmobile with classic curves and a striking profile as it drove through the streets of Gotham City. The set measures almost two feet long (60 cm), 8 in wide (22 cm) and nearly 4 in tall (12 cm).

The nose of the Batmobile features a central turbine surrounded by a pair of angled, imposing fenders. Two cold air intakes are replicated on each side in front of the rear fenders for the vehicle’s afterburners. The back-side of the Batmobile is more rounded, with the exhaust flanked by two low-profile, wing-like fins.

The new “wrap-around” windshield element slides forward to reveal the two-seat cockpit, dashboard, other technical systems. Two machine guns pop out of the sides when the aft turbine exhaust is rotated. The wheels feature the bat logo on the hubcaps, and a grappling gun can be seen on either side.

When compared side-by-side with the actual Batmobile used for filming, you can see the level of detail that LEGO has attempted to replicate including the black shielding, sweeping curves and overall imposing presence.

In terms of minifgures, the 1989 Batmobile comes with three: Batman, The Joker and Vicki Vale. The set also includes a brick-built minifigure display stand with gargoyles peering over each end.

The Batman minifigure is based on Michael Keaton’s portrayal in the film and features a new torso print, dual-sided head, and a molded, rubberized cowl and flowing cape that matches his 1989 costume.

The other two minifigures include The Joker with new printing meant to match Jack Nicholson’s famous devious grin as well as Vicki Vale, portrayed by Kim Basinger in the film.

Not content to release just one new Batmobile for Black Friday, LEGO is actually releasing a second gift-with-purchase version on the same day. People who purchase the big 1989 Batmobile between November 29th and December 5th will receive this exclusive mini replica of the original model as a free gift-with-purchase while supplies last.

40433 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition comes with 366 pieces and a rotating base as well as stud shooters, flames coming out of the rear afterburner, and a stickered information plate.

You can see the 1989 Batmobile in action in this video that shows off the sheer size of the model as well as the play functions of the set including the movable windshield and hidden machine guns.

76139 1989 Batmobile will be available from LEGO beginning on November 29 for Black Friday and will sell for US $249.99 | CAN $299.99 | UK £219.99.

was the tumbler not also a UCS model, or are we not considering that one a batmobile?
i generally hate being out in the black friday crowd, but i’d really like that “mini” batmobile, almost more than the big one, so i may not have a choice.
i suppose ordering online is an option, though.

Very odd that neither the press release nor the feature video mentions that this actually has steering.
