TBB is recruiting for Social Media Manager and DevOps Engineer roles [News]

As one of the most popular LEGO websites in the world, with a monthly reach of several million, The Brothers Brick is a much more complex operation than many of our readers may expect. At the same time, our readers may also be surprised that every one of our team members is a volunteer! If you’d like to be part of the team that supports a diverse, global audience of highly engaged LEGO fans, TBB is looking for two very special roles to help support our growth. If you want to make our social media channels sing or get a kick out of keeping AWS infrastructure humming, read on!

Social Media Manager

In addition to the core website, TBB has a strong presence on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter, with active discussions among our readers. We’d like to improve our presence and growth on each of these platforms through more consistent engagement with our readers. If you have professional experience in community engagement or social media management and would like to apply your skillset to helping support the largest LEGO fan community on the web, we want to hear from you.

We’re looking for someone with the following background and skillset:

  • Experience running social media engagement at scale (hundreds of thousands of followers across multiple channels, millions of monthly reach).
  • Familiarity with The Brothers Brick and the broader AFOL community.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of social media management tools and technology, with a willingness to recommend new platforms or systems to improve growth and engagement.
  • Ability to maintain high confidentiality and discretion for embargoed news and other information you may learn through non-disclosure agreements between TBB and its partners, including the world’s largest toy manufacturer.

The likely time commitment would be several hours per week, though more availability could produce even stronger results.

DevOps Engineer

The Brothers Brick has long outgrown shared and even dedicated servers and has been on scalable Infrastructure as a Service for several years, with annual uptime approaching five nines or more. But even when hosted on AWS, TBB’s tech stack still needs regular maintenance and occasionally emergency intervention. We’re looking for an experienced DevOps or infrastructure engineer who can provide backup coverage, potentially in a different time zone from our primary engineering resources on the US west coast.

Specifically, we’re looking for someone with:

  • Experience managing WordPress websites
  • Experience with AWS systems and concepts (ECS)
  • Experience managing applications via containerization (Docker preferred)
  • Experience managing services with infrastructure as code
  • Availability to share outage monitoring and remediation
  • MySQL experience preferred
  • Experience with caching strategies a plus
  • Experience with advertising technology a plus
  • An interest in LEGO culture

We don’t anticipate needing a time commitment of more than a few hours per month, unless you also want to help with an upcoming website redesign. Although this is a volunteer position like all other TBB roles, one benefit is that you’ll be able to work alongside very experienced technology leaders (VPs and Directors from well-known technology companies). You’ll be included as a full member of the TBB team, with access to behind-the-scenes discussions about LEGO and the LEGO fan community.

To apply, please use our standard contributor application form. Since we’re looking for specialists with professional experience rather than general LEGO writers, please include a link to your LinkedIn profile. We’ll follow up with the most promising candidates to request a résumé/CV.
