It’s that time of year again, at least in the United States. Kids everywhere are getting to Target or Walmart and picking up folders, reams of loose-leaf paper, #2 pencils, pens, markers, crayons, Elmer’s glue, and everything else on the supplies list sent them by their new teacher. Builder H.Y. Leung brings us a timely series of builds, perfect for my kids to bring to their giant LEGO school. I say giant, because these are truly massive, despite how small they might seem at first glance. The ruler, for example, is not the mere 20cm that it indicates, but a whopping 195cm (or 77 inches – about three inches longer than I am tall)! Some clever studs-not-on-top (SNOT) work integrates the numbers and hash marks elegantly into the overall shape.

Next up is the eraser, which, though not nearly so huge, is still oversized compared to its real-life counterpart. More SNOT with some baby bows makes for curved letters that could easily be found on the packaging of a real eraser. The blue paper over the white rubber looks just like one that I have somewhere stashed in my desk. I love how the builder has rounded off a corner of the eraser, showing that this one is not quite new.

Finally comes the pencil, a proper #2 lead, just the right type for filling in all the little bubbles on the standardized tests the kids have to take these days. If you are in doubt about the scale of this one, let me get to the point: it’s a small cone, and the little holes where a machine has poked the metal sheath for the eraser to hold it to the wood are 1×1 Technic bricks. I am not sure I could pick this pencil up, let alone trace the ABCs on the dotted lines, but it does look great.
