LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71023 for The LEGO Movie 2 officially revealed [News]

Today we’re getting our first official, high-quality look at LEGO’s newest line of Collectible Minifigures, featuring characters from The LEGO Movie 2, thanks to LEGO’s Chinese and Taiwanese first-quarter catalogs. This series, 71023 The LEGO Movie 2 Collectible Minifigures will feature 20 characters from the new film, some of which are cross-licensed with The Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the West and her Flying Monkeys made an appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie with sets such as The Ultimate Batmobile, and it looks like the rest of the gang is showing up in The LEGO Movie 2. Most other sets for The LEGO Movie 2 are already available. The film comes out Febuary 8.

Simultaneously, German retailer B&B published their listing for the new series, providing us with a few extra details, such as the case image.

Apoca-LIncoln! Besides him, I’m really only digging Apoca-Benny, Apoca-Lucy, and Apoca-Cat Lady. The rest don’t do too much for me.

I’m still confused why I have so little interest in this series. Dorothy, Apoca-Cat-Lady and giraffe are ok, some parts (golf club, recolored accessories, that tile with drawing) are great but too many are superflous (musicians, unikitty, benny, swampthingwhipguy???)

I may grab Dorothy so I can have the cute little Toto dog, but like the other posters, I’m not really feeling this series …

Overall I really dig these figs (Despite finding the strong Wizard of Oz presence to be quite odd, unless it amounts to more than a single easy joke in the film) — but Benny, Emmet, and Unikitty are HUGE disappointments. I’m also not stoked about the Swamp Creature… dominatrix? I guess it’s been six or so years since Monster Hunters, but that’s still pretty far from the timeframe I want for a common minifig to pop back up in a collectible series. Everything else looks great to me. 4/5s ain’t bad at all!

Addendum: If I didn’t love Jem & the Holograms, I could easily see another four of these figs being a disappointment. Buuut I do! I also find mascot minifigs to be always very good, but I have no doubt that a lot of people are more selective than me regarding mascot figs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I will always eat ‘em up. I hope that one day we’ll get one dressed as a big LEGO minifig, haha.

Having seen the movie… I am even more confused and disappointed by the selection of minifigs in this. Three of the four musicians have no part in the movie (I think I saw them in a single crowd shot). The swamp creature is featured for a single split-second bit of humor, but it’s not relevant to it being a swamp creature in any way. The mascots are just background filler (Albeit still good! Also, I saw a fox mascot that would’ve been cool to get…). The Wizard of Oz characters are used as mild visual referential humor for a musical moment, without speaking parts (I… kinda figured this could be the case, just so they could get these cool minifigs out). All of those minifigs have nothing to do with representing any part of the film, and if you blink you’ll miss them.

That Unikitty is still a terrible addition and I still don’t see anything unique about it, let alone anything that says “This is from The LEGO Movie 2!”. They COULD have had a unique TLM2 Unikitty for this, if they’re that desperate to include the core characters (Although, Metalbeard didn’t make the cut, so…). This Benny is also bad (Although I now see his toolkit is unique), and could’ve been a VERY much more interesting Benny from the movie. As for Emmett… there’s not a lot else you could get from TLM2’s Emmett, although there are some face options they could’ve gone with.
