2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 22

Welcome to Day 22 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star WarsLEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. Will we get something new for Day 22?

For Day 22, we have a festive moisture vaporator from Star Wars, a microscope ornament from Friends, and robot from City.

Dave: The Christmas tree vaporator is really what LEGO advent calendars are all about: having a little bit of festive fun with ingenious microbuilds. This didn’t require any custom-printing like minifigures from years past and is still just as fun, plus it is leaps and bounds ahead of the other vaporator from the 2104 advent.  It does hold the distinction of being the set with the most bright green bars (a total of five, including an extra), just beating out 10255 Assembly Square. The Friends microscope reminds me of 40314 Magnifying Machine, though my favorite part is the bright light yellow tile. For City, the build reminds me of the Clockwork Robot from CMF Series 6, even down to the red hands!

Andrew: A moisture vaporator Christmas tree! That’s pretty fantastic. I’ve been continually impressed by the STEM focus of many LEGO Friends sets, so it’s great to have a microscope in this year’s calendar. The little robot in the City set is great — is that a tiny skyscraper it’s towering over?

Chris: Three solid models here. That green moisture vaporator may not be canon, but it is awesome. On the microscope, I like how the designer incorporated the Friends heart shape into the slide holder, where it actually makes sense. And the robot is just too great, with a tiny city to wreak havoc upon. Plus, more rare red clips!

NickThe Star Wars build today is clever and adorable.

Edwinder: In an alternate timeline, Luke had to stay back for harvest for another season. This is what he does when he’s so bored out out of his brain: decorate the moisture vaporator like a Christmas tree. I’m not sure how Chris and Andrew saw a microscope for Friends because I see a coffee-maker. Maybe its just too early in the morning and I haven’t had my cuppa. And for City, robot rulez! Again I shall say, we need tons of these! Robotz, ATTACK the City! Now there’s a play-theme for you LEGO: “City Under Siege.” Let’s make that happen!

Rod: The robot might have been better with binoculars on a 1×1 round plate to give it a bit more personality. But other than that, it’s a lovely little build. I must admit I had no idea what the Christmas vaporator was at first!

Luka: The Star Wars build is my favorite of the whole series–what a unique idea! The microscope looks horrible, but I am thankful to LEGO for exposing kids to science. The robot is an interesting build, but lacks a face. At least it has interesting pieces.

    Oooohhh….imagine this:

    “Lego City: Under Seige”

Instead of releasing normal city sets, Lego spends a year making sets that are more action themed, but that still relate to City. Examples could include aliens invading restaurants, city-wide fires, and maybe even a Lego-original set of super heroes and super villains.

I’ve spent all day arguing with my husband about whether the friends one is a microscope or a blender….
