2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 9

Welcome to Day 9 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star WarsLEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. Will Day 9 be sublime?

For Day 9, we have a General Grievous’ Starfighter from Star Wars, a rocking horse reindeer from Friends, and a lamp from City.

Dave: That’s about as good as you’re gonna get for that Starfighter at that scale. Even the last full size rendition (8095 from 2010) had trouble replicating those curves. The Friends rocking reindeer is pretty simple. I am most excited about those two inverted curved slopes in a relatively rare color. And the lamp? I’m a bit of a winter village snob, so it could have been done better, thought getting a green “plume” piece is exciting!

Edwinder: I’m starting to dread this years Star Wars’ builds–not very popular vehicles indeed. Though maybe it is the Christmas spirit in me, but I think the colors of the Rocking Dog are lovely! Wait-a-minute… Is that a Reindeer? Or a Horse? For City, is it a tradition to hang mistletoe off public lamps and street lights? I’m kinda confused with these!

Andrew: I’ve always liked the Art Deco/Dieselpunk aesthetic of General Grievous’ custom “Soulless One” Starfighter, but rendered in LEGO it’s always felt underwhelming. Unfortunately, this micro version is no different, and I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the rocking horse either. But the street lamp is downright charming!

Daniel: I like the reboot of General Grievous’ Starfighter which is a big improvement over the previous 2012 advent calendar version. I’m feeling pretty meh about the rocking reindeer, but I do really love the streetlight which reminds me of an older gaslight.

Chris: Wow, three solid models in one day. OK, General Grievous’ Starfighter isn’t amazing, but it’s hard to figure how it could be done better at this scale. And the rocking horse is quite nice for an ornament. The lamp post would fit right in with the Winter Village sets, which is something you can’t say about most of these models.
