2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 1

It’s that time of year again! Break out the hot cocoa and stoke the fire, because The Brothers Brick is counting down to Christmas the only way we know how: with LEGO Advent Calendars! Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star WarsLEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from our team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. So without further adieu, here we go!

The 2018 LEGO advent calendars are starting out strong with a landspeeder from Star Wars, a heart ornament from Friends, and a space shuttle from City.

Dave: I love the LEGO advent calendars and seeing how tiny pieces can be used in in creative ways. This year the Friends calendar will be most interesting with (spoiler alert) only ornaments and no mini-dolls. Piece counts should be higher though, a welcome change to some of the frankly insulting builds from past calendars. But this heart is a good start.

For Star Wars, Luke’s Landspeeder hasn’t been in an advent calendar since 2014, though I much prefer this version. LEGO has historically put mini-versions of currently available sets in these advent calendars, so I assume this is based on set 75173. (Honestly, I would have preferred the medium nougat colors of the full set instead of tan for the main body. The mini-version reminds me too much of this key-chain.) For City, we have a space shuttle with boosters, but oddly no wings, so that shuttle isn’t going to fly too far.

Chris: I think this year is off to a great start. The Landspeeder is quite nice, and the tiny space shuttle is super cute, even if it does lack wings. The heart ornament isn’t really my cup of tea, but it’s well done for what it is.

Daniel: Why is the heart wearing a Boutonniere? I love the speeder! It looks like he is looking over at the shuttle thinking, “If only I could go into space like you.” The landspeeder is definitely my favorite.

Edwinder“Speeder <3 Shuttle: A Love Story” – Once upon a time a Speeder was travelling, lonely as always, but fate brought a Shuttle and they became fast friends! Unfortunately, they would never be together long for Speeder could never reach the heights of Shuttle. And Speeder found Shuttle’s fuel was too high-maintenance and costly to keep up with.
