LEGO BrickHeadz 41622 Peter Venkman and Slimer from Ghostbusters [Review]

Ghostbusters kicked off as a LEGO theme in 2014 with the LEGO Ideas 21108 ECTO-1, which unleashed nostalgia for those of us who grew up in the 80s. Since then, with the licensing deal already in place, LEGO has released quite a few follow-ups, including the splendid 75827 Firehouse Headquarters and several LEGO Dimensions releases of small Ghostbusters builds with minifigures. LEGO Ghostbusters has now found a new lease of life with the introduction of the BrickHeadz format with 41622 Peter Venkman and Slimer, numbered 62 and 63 respectively in the series. The two-pack release costs $19.99 for 228 pieces.

LEGO Ghostbusters from 2014 to 2018

Before we dive into the review, let’s take a look at an infographic that illustrates the sets released in this theme to date. This Ghostbuster lineup spans the past 4 years from the LEGO Ideas theme to regular sets and LEGO Dimensions game packs. The real favourites of mine are actually the minifigures — especially the Stay Puft minifigure from the LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack.

The packaging and parts

Shipped in two separate bags and instruction booklets, this is the common approach taken for BrickHeadz that come in two-pack releases.

The parts for Peter Venkman consist of a fair bit of round 1×1 quarter tiles in brown mainly used to make up his hair. Slimer has a healthy set of green elements and a single printed tile (other than his eyes) for his mouth.

The unique printed elements for Venkman include a slime-stained 2×4 tile, a rounded 2×2 printed part for the proton gun, two 2×4 bricks for his overalls and my favourite, the 1×2 tile with the Ghostbusters insignia.

Slimer comes with a playful 1×4 mouth printed on a tile that potentially could come in handy for custom creations.

New and rare-colored elements

The hidden stars of this particular set are these elements in lime green.

Making a debut appearance in this particular set are 3 elements in Lime Green.

  1. The Modified 1 x 2 with Clip Horizontal on Side – 2 pieces.
  2. The Technic, Plate 1 x 5 with Smooth Ends, 4 Studs and Center Axle Hole – 1 piece.
  3. and finally the Tile, Modified 1 x 1 Half Circle Extended (Stadium) with Groove  – 3 pieces, of which only 2 are used (1 is an extra element).

Two other pieces which have been released previously but are currently still rare are the Slope, Curved 2 x 1 Inverted — found only in one other set — and the 2 x 4 Tile which appears in 3 other sets, but only one piece per set, where Slimer is decorated with 5 pieces.

The build

Peter Venkman’s build follows the standard template that all BrickHeadz have used since the theme’s inception.

What gives him his signature look is the receding hairline with a tuft of hair at the middle of his forehead.

Brown elements make up a large portion of his hair.

Black elements and the printed round tile make up the proton pack.

To help jog your memory, here’s a snapshot of the proton pack and its indicators. I’d say the LEGO designers did a fair job with the printed plate.

The completed look for Venkman has slime running all over his forehead and all over his outfit.

For reference, here’s Venkman’s first encounter from the 1984 movie with Slimer being… well, slimed.

Slimer starts off with a slightly different build as he does not have any legs. He still does have the pink 2×2 element as the ‘brain’ that appears in nearly all BrickHeadz.

The mouthpiece is made up of a Technic 1×5 plate with 4 Studs and a Centre Axel Hole element, which we mentioned earlier is the first time it’s appeared in this colour.

The underside of the build is void of the typical Brickheadz legs.

Slimer is completed with butt cheeks to add to his playful humour.

The completed build of Slimer is equipped with two hotdog sausages and a bun to go.

In some of the marketing material and teasers, Slimer tends to be floating in the images. However, there’s no magic behind this — the set comes with a 2×4 transparent brick to hold him in place.

Summary

If you’re a fan of Ghostbusters, you definitely want to add this to complete your collection. Venkman is well-represented and Slimer looks way cuter than his movie counterpart.

It would have been nice to see the team together, including Raymond, Egon, and Winston, but perhaps that is in the pipeline, maybe even with Rick Moranis as Louis or Sigourney Weaver as Dana. While that’s wishful thinking to have the whole gang together, I’d settle for a BrickHeadz Stay Puft marshmallow man.
