A towering castle of a different age

LEGO bricks and their interlocking system allows for certain architectural shapes stone or clay brick could never take, giving rise to many fantastical castle creations, much like this one by Zachary Milenius. The builder takes a unique turn with the choice of setting though; expected grays and earth tones give place to yellow and white with red brick showing through the cracks – a colour combination immediately recognizable to every LEGO pirates fan growing up in the 80s and 90s.

The impressive 4x4x2 foot diorama has taken almost a year to complete, but it probably did not take long for the judges to award it the title of the best individual display at BrickWorld 2018. A unique and flawlessly executed build like this would deserve nothing less.

The impressive size and the characteristic shaping of both the cliff and the fort are not the only things earning the build said title. I invite you to look closer at all the details, ranging from the ships’ design to the little wall built into the rock at the side, but most of all my favourite part, the beautiful flow of colour and subtle textures used throughout the build.
