LEGO Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 75931 Dilophosaurus Outpost Attack [Review]

We conclude our reviews of the current wave of LEGO sets from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with 75931 Dilophosaurus Outpost Attack, which retails for $39.99 in the US ($49.99 in Canada | £44.99 in the UK).

The set includes 289 LEGO pieces, 3 minifigures, and the titular dinosaur plus a baby raptor. Like 75927 Stygimoloch Breakout, the set depicts a holding pen with an attached observation post, but the two sets are very different. Let’s take a closer look.

The box, instructions, & sticker sheet

With a similar size and price point, 75931 Dilophosaurus Outpost Attack matches the packaging configuration of 75927 Stygimoloch Breakout, with two numbered bags and loose instructions & sticker sheet, plus the addition of another unnumbered bag containing the 22L zipline pieces in flat silver.

The sticker sheet is fairly small, with a computer display screen, scratch-mark details on dark blue, and a handful of warning/caution stickers.

The build

Despite its small size, I found this set the most interesting build of the Fallen Kingdom assortment, with a surprisingly complex build for the fencing around the holding pen. The flexible zipline pieces attach to clips in the fenceposts, which are reinforced on either side with plates attached to brackets. Compared to rather flimsy, throw-away fencing in various LEGO sets of days gone by, the electric fence surrounding the Dilophosaurus looks sturdy enough to withstand the attacks of even the strongest of theropods — but who am I kidding? We all know they’re going to escape and wreak havoc.

The finished model

The completed build has an observation post with an armored viewport, a gate, and two sections of electric fencing. The base of each fence section is decorated with some foliage, including two of the new leaf pieces.

Pressing Technic pins on each side of the gate pops the gate sections off their fenceposts, though doing so repeatedly is likely to stress the top clip piece over time.

All of the Fallen Kingdom LEGO sets share a design aesthetic, with dark blue highlights. Even the lights atop the fenceposts are similar between sets. However, the fencing in this set is very different from the fencing in the Stygimoloch set — great for variety when you’re building each, but it limits your ability to integrate the two into a single, larger playset.

Pressing another Technic pin on the back of the observation post pops out the large dark blue section with a viewport, further proving the point I made about the poor craftsmanship of structures in the Jurassic Park world.

The observation post itself includes a desk with a large-screen computer. The roof above the upper level is attached and angled with stormtrooper shields on clips.

A small crane sits atop one of the larger fenceposts, allowing you to drop in or extract the baby raptor included in the set.

Minifigures & creatures

Unlike the other Fallen Kingdom sets, 75931 Dilophosaurus Outpost Attack only includes unnamed guard minifigures. The trio all wear identical tactical gear, with a variety of accessories. The black mohawk hair piece was previously only available in the A-Team LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack on the B. A. Baracus (Mr. T) minifig, and the night-vision goggles have also been in only a handful of sets.

None of the characters have alternate expressions, though they all have detailed printing on their backs.

As we noted in our LEGO Dinosaur Field Guide, the “Dilophosaurus” in this set digresses rather significantly from our current scientific understanding of the real-life creature from the early Jurassic.

Nevertheless, it’s a gorgeous creature, presented with more detailed printing on its body on an olive green base rather than the lime green of the 2015 version of the same dinosaur.

This set also includes a baby raptor in sand green.

Conclusions & recommendation

The lack of unique minifigs and rather high cost for the part count do detract from this set, but the gorgeous (if scientifically inaccurate) dinosaur, fairly unusual accessories, and a surprisingly fun build all contribute to a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Since the dinosaur itself is also a rehash of the 2015 version, it’s hard to recommend this set at full price, but it’s definitely worth picking up if you run across it on inevitable discount a few weeks after the movie’s release.
