Shortlist announced for Brothers Brick LEGO Creation of the Year 2017 [News]

For over a decade the Brothers Brick has been highlighting the best LEGO models, and 2017 has seen some excellent creations. To celebrate 12 months of great building, the Brothers Brick team has looked back over everything we’ve featured and pulled out the best LEGO creations of 2017.

TBB LEGO Creation of the Year 2017

Take a look at the fantastic models we’ve shortlisted, and stay tuned for the announcement of our LEGO Creation of the Year 2017 on New Year’s Eve! And don’t forget to check out the 2016 shortlist, and 2016 LEGO Creation of the Year to see what honourable company this year’s nominations enjoy.

First up, it was impossible not to love this iconic Porsche 911 Targa in 70s-chic black and gold, put together by the Arvo Brothers. Beautiful and accurate shaping — an immediately recognisable modelling of a classic vehicle. We love a good car model here at TBB, and this was an absolute standout in 2017…

But let’s not forget the emission downside of petrol-powered cars, nor the other challenges facing our environment. That was the message behind Emil Lidé‘s clever model depicting an island paradise with a serious pollution problem lurking just beneath the surface…

And who knows what dire consequences environmental pollution might trigger in the future — perhaps nothing less than the total collapse of civilisation? It could all end up looking like Tim Schwalfenberg‘s stunning The Last Of Us diorama. Decayed and dilapidated structures are difficult to do well in-the-brick, but this massive 20,000-piece creation pulled it off admirably…

A more utopian vision of urban living was conjured up by Jeff Friesen with his stunning microscale cityscape. A fabulous colour-scheme and imaginative parts use, coupled with effective building within a tight footprint, made for a fine example of teeny-tiny LEGO construction…

Microscale building was also key to the sense of scale for Jonas Norlen‘s Undersea Salvage Mech. Whilst looking capable of heavy lifting, those spindly limbs did lend a slight comic aspect to the mech’s frame — providing a much needed dose of character in a building genre which has recently turned very grey and serious and military. This marvellous model was fun as well as “realistic futuristic”…

Sticking with the sci-fi for the moment, we loved Rat Dude‘s giant deep-space cargo-hauler. This was one of the most striking LEGO SHIPs (“Supremely Huge Investment in Parts”) we saw all year — an impressive level of greebly detailing, coupled with an unusual, and wonderfully retro, colour-scheme…

Back down to earth with a fabulous depiction of an older transport technology — Sven Franic‘s impressive Funicular Railway diorama. It seemed lovely architectural details and accurate modelling of the track and cars wasn’t enough for Sven — he also included LEGO motors so the cars would run up and down the incline!

Uspinjaca Funicular

Dialling the clock back, Nathaniel‘s striking Native American figure really caught our attention. This model showed clever combinations of LEGO building systems — a Star Wars “constraction figure” face, Technic elements, ball-and-socket joints, regular bricks, and even old Duplo fur pieces! It all came together in a striking creation…

American Indian

More historical figures made their way onto the shortlist in the shape of Eero Okkonen‘s duelling swordsmen. The details of the combatants’ armour are incredible, and the whole thing is enhanced by the bridge, the blossoming cherry tree, and the stone ornaments. One of the best “character” models (larger than minifig-scale) that we saw all year…

The New Shogunate

Last, but by no means least, this Alien Xenomorph bust by Blair Archer gave us nightmares for months. The biomechanical feel of Giger’s design is captured perfectly here — especially the transparent carapace of the skull, a detail of the original Alien which LEGO modellers often leave out. Beautiful and scary at the same time…

We hope you agree our shortlist represents some of the finest LEGO building we’ve seen this year. If you think we missed something special, please let us know in the comments!

Look out for our announcement on New Year’s Eve when one of these shortlisted models will be crowned the Brothers Brick LEGO Creation of the Year 2017.

Superb shortlist – well done everyone. ‘The Last of Us’ wins it for me, though. Stunning build.
