Vintage Atari project reaches 10K on CUUSOO [April Fool’s]

While Iain Heath and I were geeking out this weekend at a comic book convention, something strange happened.

OMG WE DID IT!!!

Flickr user atarifan401 managed to marshall the powers of vintage Atari video game fandom to follow in the footsteps of LEGO Minecraft and LEGO Shaun of the Dead to reach 10,000 votes on LEGO CUUSOO.

To be honest, I think these designs are, well, not that great. It’ll be interesting to see what transformation they undergo as LEGO works through the design process with “atarifan401”.

This is awesome! I’ve discovered and been playing this game on Google Apps on the Google Chrome browser. I wonder how he’s going to do the invisible dot, and the other easter egg..

This better not be an April Fool’s joke….

    Yes, I know it’s an April Fool’s joke. :P

I think you’re being very kind about your assessment.

Where are the people on Cuusoo that are be working on successful and popular new versions of Blacktron, classic Pirates, or Forestmen sets – or anything that’s an actual Lego property for that matter?

I thought the minecraft project was entirely without merit, but this is a new low. I genuinely believe that Cuusoo is a brilliant idea, but for as long as this kind of dubious, niche-comunity-driven support action holds court, I have little hope that truly creative projects are ring to get the attention they deserve.

Is it any coincidence that Lego have just changed their submissions policies? http://legocuusoo.posterous.com/approval-process-for-new-projects-on-lego-cuu

Anyone clever enough to build a spambot capable of outsmarting the CUUSOO system deserves to have their set put into production.

I’m honestly surprised that more than a couple people not only didn’t realize this was an April Fool’s joke, but also were fairly indignant about this project (and other legitimate, non April Fools pieces on Cuusoo).

Yes, this particular piece is obviously fairly dopey, but that was the point in making it an April Fool’s piece.

But Paul, please, take a breath and relax. :)
