All the minifigs ever could fill 170 swimming pools

We have a winner! Fun facts like that won Jamie “Morgan19” Spencer the $25 LEGO gift certification. Congrats, Jamie!

Some more great minifig facts Jamie came up with:

  • Since 1978, LEGO has released almost 4,000 unique minifig designs.
  • If all the minifigs ever produced decided to get together and form their own country, their total population would make it the most populated nation in world— three times larger than China and almost a dozen times larger than the United States.
  • The number of unique male to female minifigs ever designed is about 18 to 1.

Thanks to Steve Witt and the rest of the good people of LEGO for putting up the prize, and to all of you out there for joining in the fun!

“If all the minifigs ever produced decided to get together and form their own country, their total population would make it the most populated nation in world— three times larger than China and almost a dozen times larger than the United States.”

That’s still not correct. The population of the USA is 300 million, so times 12 would be 3.6 billion. China has at least 1.5 billion people, three times that would be 4.5 billion people.

Can I win something by making up numbers too? :P

I didn’t “make up numbers,” thanks. The easily-researched starting statistic is that LEGO had made 3.7 billion minifigs by 2003. Given that that was five years ago, there’s obviously some wiggle room in the actual number since then.

The current population of the US is about 304 million. That statistic times twelve is just shy of 3.7 billion. 304m x 12 = ~3.7b

The current population of China is just over 1.3 billion. That statistic times three is 3.9 billion. 1.3b x 3 = ~3.9b.

Given that the original LEGO statistic was 3.7 billion, I’d say that 3.7 and 3.9 are pretty close to that…

The current population of the US is about 304 million: 304m x 12 = ~3.7 billion. (Total minifigs times twelve is about the same as current US population.)

The current population of China is about 1.31 billion: 1.3b x 3 = 3.9 billion. (Total minifigs times four is about the same as current Chinese population.)

    So where’s the problem…?

    ^ D’oh!

Meant to say “US/Chinese population times X is about the same as total number of minifigs produced,” not the other way around– got the two elements reversed.
