LEGO Disney 43215 The Enchanted Treehouse [Review]

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Disney. There have been a bunch of sets released so far that commemorate the long history of animated and live-action stories over the years. Many of these sets include princesses and princes in the traditional minifigure style. But with many of the recent Disney sets designed to feature the minidoll style first introduced with the LEGO Friends theme, many LEGO and Disney fans are sure to be excited about of of the latest sets to include this style of figures. LEGO Disney 43222 The Disney Castle: new and improved? [Review]

When it comes to Disney’s theme parks, there’s nothing more iconic than the fairytale castle that sits at the center of each magical land. In 2016 LEGO released its biggest Disney set ever, 71040 Disney Castle, which portrayed Cinderella’s white and dark blue castle that sits at the heart of Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida. But in 2020 Disney repainted the castle to celebrate the park’s 50th anniversary (or 70th anniversary of the release of Cinderella, depending on which Disney source you reference), updating the fairytale fixture with peach-colored walls, darker stonework, and more gold accents. LEGO retired the 2016 castle last year, but won’t leave Disney fans without a flagship set for long, as they’re now releasing a new version with an updated design and colors that match the real-world landmark. 43222 The Disney Castle has 4,837 pieces (about 750 more than the original) and eight minifigures. It will retail for US $399.99 | CAN $519.99 | UK £344.99 and will release globally on July 4th, 2023.

Beauty and the bricks

Perhaps one of the most iconic scenes in Disney animated film history is depicted here in bricks, superbly constructed by LEGO builder Konoyaro.

In this model we have the ending scene from Beauty and The Beast all built up and spectacularly accurate to the film, from the windows with the dark blue 1×2 trans-clear bricks to the floors utilizing great tiling build techniques. The shapes, sizes, and poses of the brick-built characters are completely on point. Belle’s signature dress utilizes slope pieces in various forms and even bright light yellow claw elements with 1×1 cone pieces to accurately render the ruffles of the dress. The beast is also largely composed of slopes as well as bricks and both characters are constructed in a way in which a minimal amount of studs are exposed. With this build, Konoyaro truly translates the magic of Disney fairy tale films into a LEGO masterpiece.

Six LEGO sets from Disney’s Frozen II revealed [News]

Today we’re getting our first official look at the tie-in sets for Disney’s upcoming Frozen II. As the sequel to the incredibly popular 2013 animated movie, the new film will follow the further wintertime adventures of sisters Anna and Elsa and snowman Olaf and is slated for release Nov. 22 of this year. Six new sets based on the movie were revealed by toy retailer Kockarium, so we’ve got all the details below. There are four regular sets, and two in the 4+ line (which used to be known as Juniors). We don’t have USD prices, but we do know an approximate Euro price for each.

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boldly Go Where No Princess Has Gone Before

Patty Rau has launched Cinderella into space aboard the FGP When You Wish Upon A Star. There’s a lot to love about this LEGO spaceship. The bulbous midsection is a great nod to the vehicle’s origin as a pumpkin. The ship also contains elements from all three minidoll-scale versions of Cinderella’s carriage: printed inverse slopes from Cinderella’s Carriage (2016), printed curved slopes from Cinderella’s Dream Carriage (2014), and gold filagrees from Cinderella’s Enchanted Evening.

It seems like Patty is doing a series of Disney Princess spaceships, as she has also created one for Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. Apparently Sweet Mayhem isn’t the only minidoll with a spaceship.

“How can you build this? There’s no pictures!”

“Well, some people use their imagination.” Mike Nieves has used his imagination to create a wonderfully whimsical representation of Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Mike’s character build may not have a defined face, but the pose and setting is iconically Belle. Thanks to her outstretched hand and head tucked in a book, I can almost hear her singing.

Thanks to an extensive use of curved and angled slope elements, Mike has done a great job of capturing the look of Belle. As we can see in this shot, sloped elements are also used to convey a sense of motion with the flow of Belle’s dress. There is some incredibly nice detailing here, including the clever ribbons for the hair and dress.

If you like Mike’s model of Belle, you won’t want to miss his other LEGO Disney character builds.

Microscale Agrabah from Disney’s Aladdin

This microscale model by Koen is of Agrabah, the fictional city from the Disney animated film Aladdin, and serves as the perfect bird’s eye view to the minifigure-scale scene we highlighted earlier today. The numerous tower tops using a variety of pearl gold domes and curved elements are well designed, and the inkwell part ties them all together nicely. One of my favorite missable details is the use of 2×2 macaroni tiles facing each other to create those lovely dark pink and teal stripes in the three larger towers. It also takes some clever brickwork to pair eight of the pearl gold 3×3 quarter domes together into a solid sphere.

More 2018 sets revealed with our Nexo Knights, Ninjago, Friends and Disney Princess Round-up

November is a busy time with new sets revealed for 2018 and we have already revealed 2018 sets Technic, Minecraft, City, DC Comics Superheroes, Architecture and Creator Expert themes, as well as some special 60th Anniversary sets. Now we can reveal a further selection of Nexo Knights, Ninjago, Friends and Disney Princess sets, all pictured below. Even if a particular theme does not take your fancy, there are plenty of new parts to spot within some of the sets.

Ninjago has a sub-theme of Sons of Garmadon for 2018, including a headquarters set, a larger temple and the return of hand-held rip-cord powered sets.

Pirates of the Caribbean BrickHeadz revealed, BrickHeadz available now [News]

LEGO’s new line of BrickHeadz characters are available now for LEGO VIP Program members on the LEGO Shop online. These sets will be available to the general public beginning Wednesday, March 1. LEGO’s VIP Program is free to join, and you can sign up online, so you can still order your BrickHeadz today even if you’re not already a VIP member. You can check out our reviews of The LEGO Batman Movie sets and Marvel Avengers sets if you’re not sure which one you want to buy first.

Also revealed today are two new characters from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Included in the instruction books and on the boxes for 41595 Belle and 41596 Beast are images for none other than Captain Jack Sparrow (41593) and a new character: Captain Armando Salazar (41594).

LEGO Disney Princess: Cinderella’s Dream Carriage 41053 [Review]

Next up in the Disney Princess line is Cinderella’s Dream Carriage, coming in at $29.99 and 274 pieces. I admit. I was really, really looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed.

The Build
This build took three bags, but only one instruction book. The first bag was the fountain and bench, while bags two and three built the carriage itself.

The fountain and bench are pretty straightforward. The fountain uses four of the new heart jewel pieces.

The carriage was quite fun to build. While not particularly challenging, it does use the parts to shape itself into the round pumpkin-ish shape you’d expect from Cinderella.

The Parts
There are definitely some good things in this: the gold decorative bit, the heart jewels, and the new carriage wheels.

I am happy to report the silver filigree is printed onto the blue slopes.

Overall, I definitely recommend this one. It’s a fun little build, and the majority of the parts are useful bricks and plates, with some nice printed slopes. I am slightly less enthusiastic about the Cinderella mini-doll, as I prefer the Merida mini-doll, but I think overall it doesn’t detract from the set.

LEGO Disney Princess: Merida’s Highland Games 41051 [Review]

LEGO is expanding their Friend’s scale lines with the addition of the Disney Princesses we reported earlier this year. They’ve started popping up in stores, so keep an eye out. We’ll be sure to let you know when they are available online, too.

First up is Merida’s Highland Games. The set retails for $19.99, and comes with 145 pieces. The set features Merida’s home (I think) along with a tree, a little water fall, and a catapult of all things.

The Build
Overall, I can’t say I’m terribly impressed with this set. There were two numbered bags and two small instruction booklets. I am awfully confused as to the purpose of the catapult or why we’re flinging the enchanted cookies about.

The waterfall and tree aren’t terribly impressive, but they at least make sense.

As far as the castle is concerned, I just can’t get behind lavender and tan as a color combination and it detracts for me. The build itself is fairly simplistic.

Also, the only printed things are the cookies, the bears, and Merida herself. Everything else is stickers.

The Parts
I think overall this set has a few good things going for it. Merida herself is pretty fantastic. The bears are simply adorable, and everyone needs little printed cookie tiles.

The extra pieces aren’t terribly exciting save for an extra cookie.

Ultimately, I’d recommend the set if you have someone in your life who is a huge Merida fan, as this is currently the only set she comes in. She and the bears are the only real stand-out parts to this particular set. If you can live without her and the bears, then I’d say you’re safe passing this set.

LEGO Disney Princesses Revealed [News]

Images for the upcoming 2014 Disney Princess line have been revealed, giving more detail into the new line of sets. As you can see, the figures are closer to the Friend’s line. I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking, because my inner-child has nothing more to say than high-pitched squeals of delight.
