Belated Jedi Steamfighter by Zach Clapsadle

You know how it goes. You build something for a contest, but you don’t get around to finishing it on time or taking pictures. Well, in the case of Zach Clapsadle’s Jedi Steamfighter, the lateness doesn’t detract from the awesomeness.
Zach says he wanted to create a complete hyperdrive ring. Yowza! Let’s hope he comes back [...]

Thwaak roundup for February 18, 2008

Brent just keeps churning out fantastic creations. Enough words. Here’s the LEGO.
My favorite, an air barge powered by eggbeater-shaped propellers called Weal:

Phaeton Carriage and Iron Wasp:

Shrine of Etward:

See more in Brent’s Flickr photostream.

Brent’s Irradiant Dragon

After a sojourn through some great Black Fantasy and achieving fame with his Victorian Shuttle Tyderium, Brent is back to his punky magical ways with Irradiant Dragon. As much as I’ve enjoyed everything he’s built in the intervening weeks, it’s nice to see Brent go back to his “roots” (which appear to be yellow).
Incidentally, this [...]

Last minute Steam Wars highlights

The Steam Wars contest is wrapping up tonight. Check out some of the great last minute entries showing up.
Nelson Yrizarry (BigDaddy) enters with his steampunk version of Grievous’ Wheel Bike:

Motian with his steamfied take on the Slave I:

Adrian Florea with a steampunk’d AT-TE cleverly named the AT-sTEam:

All-Terrain Steam Transport by Kaitimar

Gorazd Vahen (aka Kaitimar) enters the Steam-Wars fray with a huffing, puffing AT-ST.

The lightest speeder in the outer rim!

A while ago I mentioned the speeder Matt Forcum has been working on, and I’m pleased to report that he’s finished it:

The speeder is instantly recognizable, and yet the balloon gives it a unique steampunk twist. What strikes me most, though, is the way the driver is dressed. This thing can’t possibly go much faster [...]

Something steamy from Don Solo

Don Solo (Flickr) just calls his latest creation “thing,” but I call it cool. Reminiscent of a speeder bike or swoop, my favorite detail in this creation is Don’s use of two shovels on the front.

Admiral Merryweather’s Amazing Flying Machine

Having posted a steampunk creation that isn’t an entry for the Steam-Wars contest, Aaron Andrews provides a convenient check-list so we can confirm his creation’s adherence to steampunk standards.
My favorite: “Total disregard for physics - Check.” Click the image to read the other items in Aaron’s list.

Steam Naboo Fighter

Mark Stafford presents a steampunk version of the Star Wars Naboo Fighter. Look closely and you can spot many interesting details, like a horned helm on the tip of the ship. I particularly like the monkey replacement of R2-D2.

Stinger Monobike by Kaitimar

Kaitimar continues to update his Flickr photostream with wonderful creations, both old and new. The “Stinger” (above) is a new variation of his earlier steam hornet.
And as bonus, a steampunk blimp we missed previously in Kaitimar’s Brickshelf gallery, the Moon Moth:

Snow and steam

One of my own. Not sure if I’ll enter this in the Steam Wars contest but I had a lot of fun making it. I hope it doesn’t need much description.

London Calling

The highly unique thwaak provides us with a very original entry to the FBTB Steam Wars contest. In his own words he ‘tried for something more sophisticated looking; something that looks … like priviledged Victorian life’ and I think he succeeded admirably. My disappointing suspicion is that it won’t do so well due to its [...]

Darling Apollo IV: Machina Nosejob

My first model in about a year is one for the Steamwars contest. It’s a steampunkified pod racer. Yay!

The Darling Apollo, here in the Machina Nosejob edition, is a craft without equal. Made of the finest wood and iron, it’s not only a beauty a look at - it also pack a mighty punch. The [...]

Gettin’ steamy with Rocko

Rocko’s second entry in the FBTB Steam-Wars contest (following on his world-famous TIE fighter) is an excellent speeder bike. The boiler is simple yet effective, and the multiple propellors (for lift and forward propulsion) give this classic Star Wars vehicle a truly steampunk flair.
(Incidentally, Matt Forcum has been working on a speeder with a similar [...]

Steampunk TIE fighter

Rocko transformed the classic TIE fighter in the theme of steampunk for the Steam Wars contest on FBTB. The model is easily recognizable and at the same time completely novel. Good luck in the contest Rocko.

The Darque Pontiff takes to the skies!

His Evilness Pontiff Paeyn of the Darque Empire aloft in his sky sled, as captured for posterity by Fedde (aka cthulthu).
If this building trend keeps up, we may need to add a whole new category for all these magical flying contraptions! (Steampunk+Castle for now, and mental note to think about this later…)

News: Don and dW’s Steam-Wars contest on FBTB

Don Solo and dWhisper on FBTB Forums have started an interesting contest that should generate some very cool LEGO creations. The idea is simple: Recreate any Star Wars vehicle in a steampunk style.
As a (small) example of the sort of design the judges are going for, Don posted this adorable little steampunk R2-D2:

I can’t wait [...]

The secret of the Zephyr

Can you spot the very special way in which Tim Zarki’s flyer is powered?
