It craws on eight legs
A few days ago Adrian Florea (Olog) posted a motorized steampunk battle machine, one with aesthetics blended into a clever mechanism inspired by Theo Jansen’s walkers.
See it in action!

Its been awhile since we’ve showcased any Steampunk. Check out this sweet monoplane by 2 Much Caffeine.
What do you get when you cross an old Civil War ironclad ship with a tank? Nathan Proudlove’s Bone Rattler, a uniquely-shaped attack vehicle that Nathan says “was one of those builds that one might have in the back of ones mind for a long time and then one day, after nearly 12 hours straight [...]
Reminiscent of the planes from Crimson Skies, Scotty’s Glenflight A-450 “Buzzard” looks almost microscale, but it actually fits a minifig:
SlyOwl’s latest creation combines two of my favorite themes into one sweet little ship. Crammed with all the fun details we have come to expect from this builder, this pirate ship sets off on its quest to plunder the Steampunk world!
Linking to Jamie “Morgan19″ Spencer’s Brickshelf gallery in my last post, I realized that I’d never blogged his fighter/reconnaissance craft, the Obenwolken:
Obenwolken has a “state of the art onboard photographic recording system” to survey the steampunk battlefields of 1862, and is armed with a pair of repeating cannons. The always-excellent schematics reveal even more details [...]
Cagerrin’s poor Bionicle frog must have lost a leg, but Cagerrin is a kind soul, so now the frog has a mechanical leg:
Since the leg is apparently steam-powered, this is our first post to contain the word “frogpunk” (though not the first reference to the concept). See Cagerrin’s Brickshelf gallery for delicious froggy goodness.
Thanks to [...]
Although Aaron “DARKspawn” Andrews reminds us that both dwarves and ewoks are short, the diminutive and hirsute denizens of mines and mountains are unlike ewoks in every other way.
Most importantly, dwarves are awesome:
And ewoks are not. The end.
We feature two unique dioramas by the ever so prolific Jordan Schwartz, depicting a Victorian-esque sci-fi laboratory, which serves as the backdrop in the first part of Jordan’s fiction story called Journey to the Center of the Earth. The working lights on this creation are purchased from Lifelites.
Next is a creation called Bar of the [...]
Adrian Florea (Olog) can work wonders in themes of fantasy. Check out this trading post built on an interesting rock formation. Take a moment to absorb the details including the marketplace, tower, and the whimsical small island.
Jordan “Sir Nadroj” Schwartz is sending several intrepid minifigs on a voyage of discovery through the crust, mantle, and what lies beneath.
Check out their vehicle, the Mole:

I think it’s been a while (or at least a lot of models) since I posted anything of mine here so it might be time to hit you with one. For those following I’ve been in a very cutesy retro phase lately but I decided to take a brief sojourn away and practise my town, [...]
Occasionally I see a model that I have to blog right away. This is one of those times. Brent Wolke (thwaak) gave his magic punk dwarves a toy, he then gave their mortal enemy the orcs a bigger toy. Not to be outdone the dwarves enlisted the help of Patrick Swayze (my interpretation) and built [...]
How do people who live in a steampunk world picture their future? Jeremy (aka Smod) has the answer:
More in Jeremy’s Brickshelf gallery.
Check out jehkay’s latest creation of a flying fishing boat. What makes this special is that you can view the model in crosseye 3D, just stare at the image close to your monitor and slowly pull yourself away. It really works!
I didn’t think that Horace Cheng could improve on the wonderful flaptters (from Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky) we featured here a couple of years ago, but Horace proves me wrong with a “version 2″:
Though I kind of miss the grill, the overall shape is much better, and the chain works rather well [...]
You’d think the steampunk walker has been done to death (and perhaps it has), but occasionally I see something new I just have to blog. Today, that’s Simon Tzidik’s “Steam Prancer,” which uses whips for its feet:
Adrian Florea takes the flyers of World War II as inspiration for his latest fighter:
The angled wings, the rear stabilizers, the chrome helmets… Fantastic. Here it is from another angle:
Like several of the LEGO fans we feature here, Alex Eylar (Flickr) is one of those builders whose work we could feature just about every time he posts something. Alex’s latest creations are a rootin’ tootin’ pair of Wild West battle-critters.
The Bullfrog has a very large saw blade:
The Huckleberry skitters along on the tips [...]
As has been previously blogged here I made a cave racer and asked Jas Nagra to make a variant. As a few people expressed interest in doing their own I posted a couple more and marked the blue one with the design criterion. Well it is now developing into a little league with various racers [...]
Sometimes, it’s the description that makes me laugh. Here’s Doctor Sinister in his own words: “With the AirHorse beneath you, friends will marvel at your elegance and will envy your good fortune.” Ha!
Lots more pictures on Tabletown.
While I’ve been busy attending literary events and the first Seattle Mariners game of the season, Brent was building more crazy flying contraptions.
First up, Professor Abraham Adams aboard Nimbus. Notice the electrical sparklies that apparently power this strange vehicle:
And his arch-rival, Doc Ed Jefferson (with son George) aboard Franklin’s Kite:
Check out this nifty little steampunk triplane.
Talk about swooshable!
Update (April 2): April Fools!
Mark Stafford’s invention of the theme called science fantasy looks like a combination of castle, steampunk, and science fiction. The result is a city called Sproket. The scene depicts the city plaza under invasion by pirates while guards and citizens respond in defense.
Check out the two walkers from the scene.
Jamie “Morgan19″ Spencer is on quite a roll with his custom steampunk creations. Sure, Jamie uses paint to achieve some of the gold coloring, but it’s so darn shiny and cool that even purists have got to give these beauties a closer look. :-D
His most recent creation is a firefighting robot titled “Dühnlist, Flameward of [...]
