Forbidden Cove’s Seed Part Challenge: Week Two

Forbidden Cove is running a multi-week Seed Part contest, where the entrants have one week to build a creation using that week’s Seed Part–and it can’t be whatever the part actually is. Week one was a classic flared helm; this week is a minifig’s chair piece.

What can I say to add to the experience of viewing this amazingly bizarre creation by halfbeak? It does make interesting use of some parts (like car doors on the arms), but that’s certainly not what caught my eye. This is an engaging character, and that’s why I like it.

Something I look forward to every New Year’s Day is the lovely LEGO creations by Japanese builders celebrating the new year, most often incorporating the animal from the Chinese Zodiac. I generally wait a couple days and do a roundup, but Moko‘s dragon is too gorgeous to share later.

(And since we get at least one comment about this every year, Japan celebrates New Year’s on January 1st every year. Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar, the exact date varies by year, and is celebrated by many other Asian cultures. Just not Japan.)

Upon first glance, Taylor (Stormbringer) shows us just how lovely a good bit of landscaping can be. A good deal of overgrowth, a nice little cliff, and a tree to tie it all together, with some intrepid outdoor explorers crawling all over it for good measure.

I invite you to look just a little closer, though, and please remember that you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

New Holland Honeyeater

Gabriel Thomson just posted this beautiful creation, depicting the New Holland Honey Eater, a bird common in Southern Australia. I haven’t seen a build of a real animal look this good in a long time. I can only imagine the time and effort that went into getting the shape just right, let alone making it stand up without any external support.

Tyler Clites is in the midst of a whirlwind of creations while participating in the IronBuilder competition. The current piece is the yellow triangular sign piece that he uses for the chicken’s beak in this one. I’m loving the pose and sense of comic tension in this work.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time in the small dog area at the park lately with Josie and our new pug Ollie, who’s doing his best to set himself apart from the distinguished life and career of the late, great Mr. Pugsly. I’ve seen more chihuahuas in the last few weeks than I’d seen for years before, so I can testify to the absolute accuracy of this wonderful pup by edulyoung — from the perky ears and shiny little bug eyes to the tiny stick legs.
