Apparently, an anime movie called Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise came out in 1987. Never heard of it, but this fighter by Mike Psiaki sure is awesome.

Howl’s Moving LEGO Castle

Imagine Rigney is the only builder I know to have built Howl’s Moving Castle beyond a microscale version. For a teenage builder, this is quite an achievement as he has captured the haphazard looks of the castle by using angled plates and a mash up of rusty colors. I really do love the new Space Police III theme, from the wonderful alien minifigs to the subtle in-jokes that the designers incorporated throughout their sets.

Nevertheless, a running joke among LEGO fans is that the line is xenophobic and defames sentient non-human life forms.

Seeing District 9 last night (based on Alive in Joberg from 2005), reminded me of this great webcomic from Shortpacked! Click the preview pic below to read the full comic.

Of course, LEGO designer Mark Stafford has explained that “Space Police are only responsible for interspecies crime… Non criminal aliens are of course welcome to live and work in terran space.”

Sounds like a challenge to all you LEGO fans out there to build a creation that shows the new SPIII aliens in a more positive light.

VOTOMS Scopedog

Johnny Tang built the Scopedog mecha from VOTOMS in all its armored magnificence. The creation stands about 1.5 feet tall and features a furnished cockpit revealed in the video below.

Editor’s note: This creation incorporates large amounts of non-LEGO elements from a brand called BTR or “Built to Rule,” from Hasbro. Despite featuring “mixed media” creations from builders like nnenn, something with quite so many clone bricks is a first for TBB, and has sparked off an interesting discussion in the comments. Jon Hall (jonhall18) has built a great Savoia S.21 seaplane, but the centerpiece of this LEGO creation for me is the custom minifig of Porco Rosso himself.

More ’80s flashbacks

A few weeks ago I spent a few great hours with friends just poring over old catalogs from the early 1980s through late 1990s. I especially treasured the 1985 catalog (right, US edition) and kept a copy that my friend could spare. That was probably the first year that I was old enough to start building up my own Black Falcon army to challenge my brother’s cowardly lions. This last Saturday, one of the most prized items in our LEGO user group’s gift exchange was a stack of Idea Books from the last 30 years.

So I was absolutely ecstatic to see that Robert VH (flickr and MOCpages) had built The Spearhead, a spaceship that appeared in the 1986 LEGO comic story “Jim Spaceborn.”

During my “dark ages,” I did a pretty good job of preserving most of my bricks and instructions, but I regrettably let the catalogs and idea books go. Luckily, I have friends who have plenty of extras. Reliving those memories and garnering inspiration from those classic documents can be a refreshing addition to building.
