LEGO Elves at New York Toy Fair 2015

It definitely looks like the LEGO Friends style minifig is here to stay. In addition to the Disney Princess sets, LEGO is now releasing yet another line based on this fig: LEGO Elves. LEGO is pushing Elves with a large model built for Toy Fair…

With a plethora of great colors and all-new hair sculpts, these sets look to have wide-ranging appeal. While the release date for these sets is March, according to our sources they’re already showing up in stores.

The Elves sets continue the Friends theme of lots of parts in new colors. As always, the prices are spread across a wide range, from Aira’s Creative Workshop at $9.99 to Skyra’s Mysterious Sky Castle at $79.99. That set is the big news from Toy Fair; while most of the sets will be out in March, Skyra’s Mysterious Sky Castle won’t be out until August.

Here is the full list of Elves sets:

41071 Aira’s Creative Workshop
41072 Naida’s Spa Secret
41073 Naida’s Epic Adventure Ship
41074 Azari and the Magical Bakery

I am tremendously excited for this theme, which appeals to me on many, many levels. For starters, it has a lot of the same magic as some of my favorite themes like BIONICLE and Ninjago. Magical relics to collect, colorful and detailed character designs, an otherworldly setting, and elemental magic.

Most of what sets it apart from those themes is that it’s considerably less aggressive, which is fine by me — I feel like it’s much more balanced as a result. In a world where most LEGO castles ever released are military strongholds without a bedroom, dining room, or kitchen in sight, a theme that leaves room for peaceful slice-of-life storytelling in addition to high-stakes adventure play is a breath of fresh air.

The design language appeals to me as well. During high school I spent a lot of time reading traditional fairy tales and folk tales, and drawing pictures of magical elemental heroes and heroines inspired by what I read. So this plays right into that interest as well. If I hadn’t been so busy this month I’d probably already be working on fan art!

And the story is shaping up to be fantastic. I already managed to watch the 22-minute mini-movie when it was accidentally uploaded to LEGO.com sometime last week. The characters have very diverse and compelling personalities. Some surprisingly heavy themes even crop up at the beginning and end of the episode. I’d love for this to become an ongoing series!

I can’t say which set I’m most excited for — there’s not a set among them that strikes me as a “dud”. The castle is of course the biggest and most impressive! The ship is also brilliant with its brick-built hull. But at this point it’s looking like I might be collecting the whole theme.

Glad the LEGO Group went out of their way to create a brick-built display for this theme at Toy Fair. That and some other promotional measures like the shop.LEGO.com landing page and teaser site give me confidence that the LEGO Group is going to be working hard to promote this theme.

There’s also supposed to be an app for this theme — I look forward to learning more about that. Hoping for an adventure game, since most boy-oriented themes tend to focus more on action games and I greatly prefer adventure games as a genre.

How perfect is this theme? I mean, I prefer minifigs, but the hair is still useful, so even the downside of this is not really much of a downside. The pink and purple leaves are probably the best part, but really all the awesome pieces in exotic colours are wellcome. That brick-built hull of the ship was a pleasant surprise too.
