LEGO gets Marvel Comics superhero license [News]

With the DC Comics license fresh off the press, reports have also surfaced that LEGO has also obtained a Marvel license. Some low quality pics appear here.

EDIT: Mariann Asanuma (Model Gal) has much better pics in her photostream including some strange Hero Factory/Superhero hybrids.

The LEGO SUPER HEROES Marvel collection will spotlight three Marvel franchises – Marvel’s The Avengers movie, and X-Men and Spider-Man classic characters. The LEGO Marvel’s The Avengers movie line brings such ever popular Marvel characters as Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Loki and Black Widow to LEGO minifigure form. The LEGO X-Men collection includes minifigure comic versions of Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury and Deadpool, while the LEGO Spider-Man sets offer minifigure comic versions of Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus. The first buildable characters in the LEGO SUPER HEROES collection are highlighted by Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man. Select figures will be unveiled in the LEGO booth (#2829) during Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center July 21-24.

“Our partnership with Marvel helps us continue to deliver some of the best and most constructible Super Hero stories of all time,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “We’re thrilled to partner with Marvel to create creative, constructive play sets for builders, fans and collectors alike.”

The Hulk is really the only one I am disappointed with. (Out of the minifigs) I don’t understand why he has no face. Especially when those hybrid ones show a face. Also, I like the previous Joker minifigure better, so I am glad I got him when I did. My favorite is Wonder Woman!

@Sarah – Don’t forget that these are all prototypes. Every time LEGO displays new figs and/or pieces at conventions, people complain about how bad they look. Then when the real ones come out they look much more finished. The ostriches from Prince of Persia and Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean are excellent examples of this.

Haha, Hulk is obviously not going to be released without a face. Don’t worry. :)

Wow, Iron Man’s helmet looks huge on him. People are saying it should be changed to a helmet-printed face instead of an actual helmet, but I disagree — I think that the minifig should get a piece of chest/back armor to slip over his neck, to balance the proportions of his armor better. But I’m always hoping for more armor pieces; I may be biased.

Wana know what i think. I love the new figs, they look grate, I cant wait to get some. But I think lego is a bit late on the licensing, I mean Lego likes to release sets with movie themes when the movies come out for the optimal selling level such as Harry potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and so on. We had a Thor movie two Hulk movies two Ironman movies and like twenty X-men movies and I think Capt America will hit theators before the Lego sets are ready, not to say there not making another Capt America movie. I bet the argument to this will be “Its a comic, comics are eternal” but is that really how Lego marketing feels when they release a set.

@yoshix I think the marvel tie-in will probably be more in time for the Avengers movie next summer… which involves all of the previous film characters (ironman, thor, hulk, capt america).
I’m guessing the superhero range will have more of a generic comic inspiration rather than being sets directly tied in to the movies (similar to the old batman sets).
