The Bodville website has a bit more information about the previous cranes. This is version 6, but all the previous builds over the last few years are there.

The Electromagnet was added around version 3, yes it is cheating (the only non-lego piece), but it solved alot of issues.

The grab needed a large section above (yellow box) to house a mindstorm switch. It detects when the grab is touching a crate. I could have made this much smaller if not using Lego.
