The current population of the US is about 304 million: 304m x 12 = ~3.7 billion. (Total minifigs times twelve is about the same as current US population.) The current population of China is about 1.31 billion: 1.3b x 3 = 3.9 billion. (Total minifigs times four is about the same as current Chinese population.) So where’s the problem…?

That's still not correct. The population of the USA is 300 million, so times 12 would be 3.6 billion. China has at least 1.5 billion people, three times that would be 4.5 billion people. That’s still not correct. The population of the USA is 300 million, so times 12 would be 3.6 billion. China has at least 1.5 billion people, three times that would be 4.5 billion people.
